La Selva Biological Station




     One of the premier research centers in Costa Rica that in located in the Caribbean lowlands and bordered by the Sarapiqui and Puerto Viejo Rivers. The vegetation is classified as a tropical pre-montane wet forest, also known more commonly as a "rainforest". The Organization for Tropical Studies (OTS) bought the 1600 ha. property in 1968 and declared it as a private Biological Reserve. There exists a super abundance of fauna and flora, including 2077 plant species, 125 species of mammals, of which 72 are bats, over 470 species of birds, 48 amphibian species, 87 reptile species, 45 species of freshwater fish, along with countless species of insects, arachnids and other arthropods.
